Hi, welcome to the latest issue of Tomorrow’s Ape!

Thoughts on AI this week have been focused on how to make an AI Newsletter that you want to read. Yes you 🫵 haha

What is it about AI that peaks your curiosity? What do you like about this Newsletter? What would you like to see?

I would love to hear and greatly appreciate your thoughts. Anything is helpful. Just hit reply and write it down haphazardly if you like. Put 2 seconds into it. Your 2 seconds will be a wealth of knowledge for Tomorrow’s Ape.

Here’s what we’ve got this week:
  • The latest Fallen Fruit

  • AI Advisor Part 2

  • The Age of Leverage

  • MemGPT - Chatbots with a Memory

  • Smart Takes: Swinging from the High Branches

  • Retro Movie Rewind

FALLEN FRUIT

This looks interesting. Dot, a new kind of Operating System by New Computer.

We are going to see a lot more of these in the coming months.

AI powered and tailored more to how Human's think and interact with our personal worlds.

📦 MidJourney Updates

Couple of updates to MidJourney this week.

New Faster Website - One step closer to a simple UI

Style Tuner - Perhaps one of the most important updates that allows more control and personalisation.

Some pretty impressive updates from RunwayML this week that make the new growing platform a real player in AI Video Generation. Users have been blown away with the detail and quality.

AI ADVISOR

PART 2

Let’s cut to the chase, why would we use AI to advise us on a path forward as a Global Community or even a Local one? How on earth could an AI understand what humans need, let alone propose actions to see them realised?

Well, one reason an AI like an LLM is ‘intelligent’ is because it ‘learns’ from a large dataset that we have supplied and it is able to hold vast amounts, like all the recorded text that exists on the internet.

Essentially, from a language point of view, an LLM like ChatGPT has a store of knowledge of us better than any human on Earth.

So Language represents the first step - understanding each individuals desires and goals.

Let’s break this down from a Human Intuitive perspective.

What do Human’s want?

To Thrive

This can be in many ways from, providing for a healthy and happy family, to becoming a world leader of countries or corporate enterprises. It may even encompass those who wish to inflict as much damage to other humans as possible too.
Intuitively we know that there are a whole myriad of humans out there and a complex matrix of desires.

How can an AI help with this?

An AI is not invested in the outcome, has no point of view and is trained for optimal results. It seeks only to draw upon it’s dataset and find the answers through very large computation. Unlike political systems.

So that’s one part of the picture. As ChatGPT pointed out last week, we need a reasoning AI that can model simulations of events to see the potential outcomes, like climate models predict the weather. LLMs are best placed to collate large sets of survey information to input these AI simulators.

Public consideration comes first

These recommendations would be demonstrated to all in the Community and could be considered when voting on Proposals. We may even find that the Proposals gain a high majority vote as they are tailored for maximum viable outcome for all.

Now we can Measure

Additionally to this, a clear Measure can be placed on all Proposals which can be outlined by a separate AI agent. As real world data is accumulated these precise measures could be used to assess the accuracy of the Proposals and Simulations provided and allow for continual fine tuning. Clear accountability is something also missing from our current political system.

If tested the results could create better understandings of future outcomes and provide some interesting and perhaps unexpected proposals.

And of course…

Like with all AI possibilities they require good parameter setting, some of which would be:

- Strict assurance of privacy, encrypted survey responses and anonymity

- Calibration for good ethical and moral outcomes as some individuals in the Community may opt to submit harmful objectives in their survey.

- A small range of Proposals could be submitted publicly before deciding on a course of action to reassure that they are not being ‘Captured’ by any Political force.

I would not be surprised if these kinds of ideas are already being considered by policy makers, but I think it would be important for everyone to be aware of the possibilities so that it can be understood and steered in a mutually beneficial way.

The soul idea here is, with AI technology we have the opportunity to maximise all human thriving.

LEVERAGE

PULLING THE LEVER

I have pondered this word Leverage a lot lately and it seems to capture something about where we are at, how it relates to the coming age and how it relates to AI.

I’ve broken up the word as often I do when I see a multitude of different angles in one. Correlations, connections, you know, kind of manic stuff.

Let’s start with Leve[Rage] or of course Leave Rage…

What does this evoke for you? For me I think of social media and the siloing of ideology. The challenges the world inevitably presents you when it doesn’t fit your fixed ideas of what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. It’s enraging cos it’s out of your control. Those who are opposed to you may motivate you to want to seize some control over them, their thoughts and behaviours. We have all felt this way, it’s natural.

I’m also reminded of my parenting. The first years of your child’s life spent thinking about, trying to guide and help them through their emotions, regulating them. It’s not easy as an X gen when you’ve had no exposure to the concept when you were younger. I still remember affirmations like ‘boys don’t cry’, ‘you’ll be alright’ and sometimes even being yelled at for displaying too extreme emotions, joy or anger or anything! Leave Rage for me is coming to terms with my own history of not having emotional regulation. Most of the time you just find yourself angry a lot.

Then there’s Lever[Age] or Leaver Age…

We are all leaving our old working lives behind it would seem nowadays. Even if you haven’t left your job, you spend half of your time or at least a third of it doing your job from home. We have all but left the old 9-5 in the office. I believe this trend is only going to continue, but maybe not exactly from a purely remote point of view. Just satellite work, periods of deep work, small enterprise, side hustles and periods of collaboration where you get together. Who knows!

Now to Leverage…

It’s beautiful, because it offers a promise of abundance. Leverage your value, leverage your time, leverage your skills, leverage your personal insight, leverage technology and of course leverage AI and the rewards will grow exponentially!

MemGPT

Even with LLMs like ChatGPT we have seen incredible utility.

Imagine an LLM chatbot that goes on your life journey with you, but can store and recall upon it’s own memory.

It can evolve, create and problem solve more meaningfully and personally with you.

This could become a new kind of Operating System that would be very powerful for the individual. Essentially expanding our brains.

Alien (1979)

The central narrative of Alien may have been between biological entities i.e. Humans against an Alien Creature, but there were two key Artificially Intelligent ‘Character’s’ in the film.

Mother (computer), Ash (android)

I have to admit ‘Mother’ is one of my favourite terms for an all knowing supercomputer that takes care of your every physical and environmental needs. In this case ‘she’ is the space ships central computer.

Ash on the other hand is simply an agent of the ‘Company’ and is not always concerned with the well being of the humans on board if it doesn't serve his employer.

There is a great scene where the two AI’s are at loggerheads over what to do with there unfolding intrepid situation. I won’t give any more away as this film is a must watch for the uninitiated.
