Advice on Running the World: A Proposal for an AI by an AI

‘Images in this Newsletter made with ideogram.ai
Hi, welcome to the latest issue of Tomorrow’s Ape!
Thoughts on AI this week have been from both its practical everyday applications to its impact on the future of humanity, then mixing the two together by getting ChatGPT4 to do the work for me, ahh.. well sort of.

Stu Wilson
Here’s what we’ve got this week:
Who Are You? FaceOff
AI Governance
High Branches, Smart People Saying Smart Things
Quest3 in the Wild
First Humanoid Robotics Testing @Amazon
A State of AI Report
Retro Movie Rewind:
It’s an Obvious One This Week
WHO ARE YOU? WHO WHO WHO WHO | SORRY, BAD OLD SONG REFERENCE. THE WHO (1978) |
Examples of Generative Video Effects are getting pretty mind blowing at this stage.
The latest Awe Gazing at AI Tech is from platforms like FaceFusion, now making it even easier to seamlessly swap out faces on videos.
You can essentially record yourself and put any face you want in place of yours. Not only this, voice generation has reached an equally convincing level where you can sound like whoever you like too.
Check out this video that features a fake Barack Obama.
Obviously this brings up a myriad of concern about authenticity and Deep Fakes. The potential for any video to be fake is now a real one, so this will likely cause a general skepticism of anything we see online.
Strangely, not necessarily a negative outcome as the need to do further investigation or fact checking of the content individuals consume has long been advised, it may now become self evident.
AI FOR PRESIDENT…IAL ADVISER | A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT PART 1FIRST UP - CHATGPT4 |
The idea of having AI in any position of authority that would determine the fate of humans seems at first like the essence of George Orwell’s book ‘1984’ or the beginnings of Skynet in the Terminator. I get it, but is there an upside to this that is easy to overlook?
What are we proposing?
Let’s start this thought experiment with the following framing so we can zero in on the essential pro’s and con’s.
‘An AI that is able to consult with every individual around the Globe and Provide Recommendations on the best path forward to achieve the goals for all.’
Let’s first of all get away from the idea of AI ruling over us. We’re going to think of using an AI as a problem solver, not an authority.
For Part 1 of this thought experiment we will be consulting an AI to write it too, namely ChatGPT4.
So, I asked ChatGPT4 to get right into it. Straight away it pointed out that Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs would be a good start. Then, proceeded to lay out the whole process.

For the sake of brevity I asked for a summary, and of course ChatGPT obliged:
Where Do We Begin?
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs offers a foundational understanding:
Physiological Needs
Safety Needs
Belongingness and Love Needs
Esteem Needs
Self-actualization
How Does the AI Operationalize This?
Personal Needs Analyzer (PNA): Pinpoints individual's essential needs, using emotion recognition and feedback loops for accuracy.
Collective Needs Aggregator (CNA): Sifts through personal data to discern shared goals, utilizing data aggregation and trend analysis.
Action Proposal Engine (APE): Suggests actionable steps derived from individual and shared goals, providing scenario modeling and a feedback mechanism.
Explanatory and Demonstrative Interface: Demystifies the AI's suggestions with simulations and data-backed reasoning.
Sounds Great, But What About Ethical Implications?
Ethical and Privacy Considerations: Paramount to this system is respecting user data confidentiality, ensuring algorithmic fairness, and endorsing transparency through an open-source framework.
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
Personalized recommendations respecting individual needs.
Collective decision-making for global betterment.
Enhanced understanding of societal trends.
Cons:
Potential over-reliance on AI, sidelining human intuition.
Risk of data breaches.
Difficulty in constantly ensuring algorithmic neutrality.
Final Thoughts:
While an AI consultant presents promising potential in harmonizing individual and societal aspirations, caution is imperative. Maintaining the right balance between human judgment and AI insights, along with strong ethical underpinnings, will determine whether we're stepping into a brighter future or a cautionary tale.
Overall, pretty logical and thoughtful at first glance., a couple of interesting points to note:
“Using emotion recognition” - may seem creepy at first, but I guess it could be helpful?
“Sifts through personal data” - would clearly need to be the voluntarily provided answers to the initial survey.
“Potential over-reliance on AI, sidelining human intuition.” - pretty much sums up how I feel about this story 😂
Part 2 next week, let’s put some Human intuition into this!
HIGH BRANCHES | WHAT ARE THE SMART PEOPLE SAYING |
Ilya Sutskever is the Chief Scientist at Open AI and the co-creator of ChatGPT. |

If you read any commentary around the Benefits and Dangers of AI Technology you should read Marc Andreessen. It’s important to understand that with every Technological Advancements we have developed there has always been some element of fear. It’s also important to point out that those fears never overshadow the benefits that inevitably result from our pursuit of making things better with technology. It is simply what we do as a species. Marc has written his second essay on the topic of AI Optimism after Why AI Will save the World. Check it out. |
QUEST 3 | INITIAL IMPACT |
Meta’s Quest3 has been out in the wild now and generally well received. We’ve started seeing some examples of how people are using the virtual/augmented reality device including:

DIGIT | THE FIRST HUMANOID ROBOTIC FACTORY WORKERS |
| Digit is ‘the first human-centric, multi-purpose robot made for logistics work.’ It’s essentially designed to do the work that humans do in factories. Amazon have recently announced that they are testing them for use as a helping hand for their workforce which has apparently been struggling to keep up with the high demand of online sales. The company behind Digit, Agility Robotics also boasts the worlds first humanoid robot factory. This marks a meaningful step in the use of humanoid labour in the workforce. |
The State of AI Report is produced by Venture Capital firm investing in AI-first technologies and life science companies. Their strategy is to get in early on AI development, so it stands to reason they have a ready team of researchers thoroughly checking out the current trends of AI potential.
Here is a bit of a summary:
ChatGPT4 is still at the top despite efforts to surpass it with smaller fine tuned models.
Language Models and Image Generators are forging new innovation applications in all areas including biological and drug discovery.
Compute is the new Oil as companies seek to leverage Machine Learning to establish themselves in the AI economy. Suppliers like Nvidia are cashing in by providing the state of the art hardware needed.
A.I. (2001) STEVEN SPEILBERG
What if we programmed AI’s to have feelings and form attachments. Great for us to fulfil our own needs, but what about the rights of the Artificial ‘Machines’?
A.I. was a film originally developed by Stanley Kubrick and personally handed over to Steven Spielberg when he realised he wasn’t going to be able to complete the film.
It’s an emotionally compelling story that essentially has it’s artificial protagonists feeling, well human.
Can machines become sentient? And more importantly, do we have the will and desire to make them that way?
